Birth Class Frequently asked questions…

This class is ideal for first time moms and dads to-be and moms/couples who weren’t satisfied with their previous birth experience.

You will receive resources such as videos, pdfs, links, and access to my exclusive digital labor pocket guide. This labor pocket guide provides easy to access information that will help you get through labor and help you and your partner advocate for your choices during pregnancy and labor.

In general, this class is much more in-depth than a typical hospital childbirth class, and it includes many topics your hospital class does not cover. Hospital classes are taught from a narrow, medical perspective in order to help you understand the hospital’s procedures. This birth class presents a wide variety of perspectives and evidence-based information from experts in the childbirth field in order to give you an unbiased look at your choices during pregnancy and labor.

The term “natural childbirth” can mean different things to different women. This class is taught from the perspective that your body is capable of giving birth with little intervention and that unneeded interventions can potentially lead to unnecessary complications. This class will help you understand the rhythm of labor and strategies to get through it without medication. This class is all about showing you the evidence and presenting the different options. Ultimately, this class will help you decide what your best childbirth experience looks like without judgement.

Absolutely! Even though you may be planning on a medicated birth, you should still understand what to expect with an epidural and what evidence exists. It is also important to know how to cope with labor in case you change your mind, your epidural isn’t effective, or you start feeling pain before the epidural kicks in. Plus, coping options and getting through labor is just one of the many topics we cover.

Yes, anyone who you plan on being in the room with you may attend the childbirth class. If you will have a partner and your mom at your birth, you may have them both attend the birth class with you.

If for some reason you miss a birth class, I will reach out to you with options for getting you the class material.

This birth class is a 2 week commitment.  We meet Mondays & Wednesdays for 2 weeks from 6:15-9:15pm. You may take this birth class anytime during your pregnancy.  Many couples/moms like to take their childbirth class mid pregnancy. I provide supplemental materials you can review later on if you end up taking it earlier.

You technically can take this birth class from any device that lets you use Zoom , however I do not recommend attending the class from a phone. The best experience will be attending from a laptop or desktop computer, followed by a tablet.

This childbirth class does not teach a particular method such as “Bradley” or “LaMaze” for example, however, it teaches many of the same principles as those classes. The Bradley class I took before giving birth to my first child did not adequately help me get through labor or make the postpartum period easier. I wanted to teach a class that truly gets moms and dads prepared for labor and postpartum, so I created this class using evidence-based information from a variety of reliable sources, including my advanced birth and postpartum doula training through DONA, well-researched books, and sources written by doctors, midwives, childbirth researchers, medical experts, doulas, documented studies, government resources, and professional birth related associations. If one of your biggest concerns is coping with labor, this class is right for you.

No, the information provided in this birth class should not be interpreted as “medical advice” for you or your child’s specific situation. Birth Journey Doula’s childbirth class does not offer any medical advice, instead it will present evidence-based information and various perspectives from different types of birth providers and experts. I would suggest considering the various perspectives Birth Journey Doula’s Birth Class offers and have a conversation with the licensed birth provider you have chosen.

My childbirth preparation class is jam packed full of important information, but I was unable to fit my comprehensive breastfeeding information in this class.  Fortunately you can sign up for any of my FREE breastfeeding classesFree Breastfeeding Class before your baby is born.
